Is this the same Hirai that was blowing everyone away with Orix in the mid '90s as a closer, before getting injured?

The very same. It'd be interesting to see if he can recreate the success Takashi Saitoh has had. Like Saitoh, he has a lot of zip on his fastball for a Japanese pitcher.

He flies under the radar even in Japan, so there's a chance a team can pick up a quality reliever for dirt cheap. You have to wonder if demand for Japanese relievers will skyrocket after the performances of Ohtsuka, Saitoh, and Okajima. There are going to be a good handful of quality relievers on the market.

As much as I'd hate to see them go, Yasuhiko Yabuta and Masahide Kobayashi could be impact relievers in the majors.
